Shadow Beasts

One of the five ancient aborigine tribes of the Universal Federation, the Shadow Beasts were a fearsome, secretive lineage renowned for their unparalleled ability to operate in complete darkness. Members of this tribe possessed a natural, hereditary capacity for nocturnal vision, making them the only known humans on Terrus capable of seeing clearly without any light. This gift shaped their entire culture, combat strategy, and identity: they launched all raids exclusively at night and became infamous for defeating far larger forces with only a handful of warriors. Their most legendary feat remains the annihilation of a 120‑member rival tribe by merely eight Shadow Beast warriors, a testament to their precision, discipline, and tactical mastery.

Shadow Beast culture was defined by strict ritual and isolation. Crossbreeding with other tribes was absolutely forbidden, preserving the purity of their nocturnal lineage for centuries. Their appearance was unmistakable—elite warriors underwent full‑body black tattooing, a solemn ceremonial rite granted only to those proven capable of true night‑sight and displaying exceptional ferocity in battle. These sacred tattoos also included the dying of the sclera completely black, creating the tribe’s distinctive, haunting visage. Those born without the tribe’s night‑vision gift or lacking the temperament required for battle were not tattooed and were assigned to non‑combat, support‑oriented roles within the tribe.

The Shadow Beasts bred only black bearded broncos, which were trained to move silently at night; over time, their emblem became the black pango, a symbol of stealth, strength, and nocturnal supremacy. Their warriors were also known for possessing extraordinarily strong déjà vu abilities, often described as near‑precognitive instincts, which further fueled legends of their supernatural battlefield awareness.

The tribe’s strict purity code was broken only once in recorded history: when Queen Wishi, the child sovereign of the Shadow Beasts, conceived a son with Ram, Chief of the Battle Claws—a union forbidden by tribal law. The child, named Ram in honor of his father, was revealed as the tribe’s only known hybrid when Queen Wishi confessed the truth on her deathbed. To this day, Ram remains the sole documented individual of mixed Shadow Beast lineage.
